David Edward Wick, age 87, of Winona, MN, formerly of Delavan, MN, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, at Benedictine - St. Anne in Winona, MN, with his family close by, after battling dementia for the past several years.
He was born on March 11, 1937, to Daniel and Lillie (Sommer) Wick in Mapleton, MN. Lillie died in 1944 after giving birth to his sister, Judy. Daniel raised David as a single parent. David resided in the Mapleton area until moving to Winona.
David was a 1956 graduate of Mapleton High School and was active in Mapleton’s first FFA Club, serving as vice president. He also participated in basketball and football.
On April 26, 1959, he was married to Kathleen (Kate) Zuehlke at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, North Mankato, MN.
He worked briefly for Krengel Brothers Inc. Tiling before enlisting in the US Army. Dave was stationed in Bamburg, Germany from 1960-1961 and served in the infantry division achieving the rank of Infantry Specialist. When he returned home, Dave went to work at Kato Engineering in Mankato, MN, for 34 years, retiring in 2000.
In 1965, David and Kate moved from Mapleton to a farm owned by David’s Aunt and Uncle, Esther and Henry Grothe. They farmed the 160-acre farm, raising pork, beef, soybean and corn. After retiring from farming, in 2002, they moved to the city of Delavan, MN. His son, Dennis, and his family moved onto the family farmstead to continue the family tradition. In 2018, they moved to Winona, MN, to be closer to their daughter so she could assist them with medical care for Kate.
He was a member of the American Legion Post in Delavan, Lura Lake Sportsman’s Club, Faribault County Historical Society and the Mapleton Curling Club. David enjoyed fishing, hunting ducks and pheasants, deer hunting with his sons and son-in-law, camping, roller skating and dancing to country western with his wife, Kate.
David is survived by his three children: Deborah (David) Volkmann, Winona, MN, David K. (Natalie) Wick, Mankato, MN, and Dennis (Angie) Wick, Delavan, MN; four grandchildren: Anthony (Jami) Wick, Autumn Wick, Kalene (Calvin) Schleich, and Christopher Volkmann; four great-grandchildren: Hadilynn Wick, Zaylen Stromberg, Grayson Schleich, and Eliza Schleich.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; parents, Daniel and Lillie Wick; infant brother, Harlan; sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Donald Pollei; sister and brother-in-law, Barb and James Enz; sister-in-law, Margorie Holcomb; and infant grandson, Spenser Wick.
Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM on Monday, September 30, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mapleton, MN. Pastor Steve Berkeland will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in West Delavan/Lura Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Delavan, MN.
